Dave has been off shopping so we have Walls sausages in fridge, and he found some different (for us!) vegetarian pies - Quorn, seeing how it's getting harder and harder to get the McCartney range (someone didn't keep their promise!) and we've also got a rather good Cheddar cheese while we can get it! So we'll see you once you've said "stuff it" to the obligatory post-Christmas diet.
Don't forget that you can place an order if needs be, the next major shop is at beginning February.

I have already some Christmassy things in stock such as the puds, cakes, loose crackers (1 euro p/p!) and mince pies. Some people have asked me about turkeys etc. but quite honestly it would cost so much.....! If you live in the Leiden area there are a couple of "pouliers" I know of, one which definitely takes Christmas orders and he's situated on the Lange Mare ( the street off from the church on the Harlemmerstraat) and there's also an organic place further up the Harlemmerstraat in a wide alleyway opposite the model shop. If you're not planning on the turkey there are quite a lot of good butchers around and you'll usually get what your after. BUT, we can get it for you from the UK if you wish!
The next shopping trip is on the 10th so if you do have any orders - especially for cakes I need them in the next few days please so that I can place my orders.

The summer holidays are nearly over so it's time for another shopping trip. This will be on the Thurs 31st August, so as from the Fri then is the time to come in for the sausages, fresh pies, crumpets etc.
Apparantly that old chestnut that we've closed down, or we've moved is doing the rounds.
After more than 3 years we're still going in Korevaarstraat and, as we've moved house as many times there is no chance of us moving shop! so I now hope that these vicious rumours are to be quashed.
I've already mentioned about the holidays coming to an end and although I hate to mention Christmas this early on but I need to start getting on with that type of shopping so if you could let us know what type of items your interested in having.......

The next planned trip will be 3rd April (excellent timing, we'd have just moved house!)
Easter eggs are on the agenda along with the usual - sausages, bakery goods......
With the Easter eggs, as with the Christmas goodies, it's best to pre-order so as not to be disappointed!

What's in stock?

Below on the left side is a list of what we've stocked in the past. There are some items that wont be found on our shelves anymore and that's because either they just didn't sell well or they can now be found in the Dutch supermarkets and can be bought considerably cheaper. (We do sell Heinz baked beans, although not as cheap, but they are BRITISH!)
Robinsons hi juice drinks, although I like the taste not many other people do.
I have noticed that some supermarkets (I'm not going to name them, would they give me free advertising?!!) are beginning to sell a few of the goods that I stock so will have to see who breaks first, I guess!
I've stopped with some of the frozen puddings, meat & vegetarian convenience foods (such as the Dalepak escalops) but Dave has found a couple of replacements and for some reason the veggie dry goods seem to be "out of stock" when I order them so I shall have to have a bit of a rant at that supplier!
There's a few other bits - Knorr stock cubes, Old El Paso sauces, a couple of the soups that are no longer stocked but pretty much everything else is in the shop.

Oh yes, cheese. I'll be honest in saying that's always a tricky one knowing when people have got the taste for it. I nearly always have Cheddar, red Leicester and double Gloucester but Wensleydale, Cheshire, Stilton and any other will have to be pre-ordered if you don't mind!

The next planned shopping trip back to the UK is 06/3/06. All the favourites will be available on the Tues. such as crumpets, scones, sausages etc. and I hope this time the veggie bacon will turn up!

I'm glad to hear that people are managing to 'stumble' across this web page. It was setup by my most favourite brother-in-law (creepy-creepy crawl!) to keep prices as low as is practical - a lot of people would like us to still be around next year!, rather than being a "here today, fled tomorrow" setup!!

Anyway, moving house soon so have to get back to the packing!!

De naam doet iets anders vermoeden dan wat deze zaak, met typisch Engelse producten, te bieden heeft. Wij dachten in eerste instantie te maken te hebben met een nieuwe coffeeshop. Maar je kunt er terecht voor je HP saus, clotted cream voor op de scones, diverse marmalades en ook de door de Engelsen zo geliefde Idiase curry’s.
Dus als Jaimie weer eens double cream in zijn toetje stopt, op naar Jungle Jims, een oerwoud vol Engels lekkers.

Jungle Jim's is echt geweldig, dit soort winkels maken Leiden tot een stad, ik zelf haal er graag Irnbru een schotse frisdrank en Vegamite wat ik in Australie vaak at, ze hebben er echt van alles !

ik heb een hekel aan vegetariers maar bij Jungle jim schijnen ze het zo te verdelen dat je er prima terecht kunt voor enorm gezonde vegetarische en veganistische happen. En vergeet niet de engelse
worstjes ..en dat is waarom ik deze Kritiek schrijf... alles voor een High Tea, een echt Engels Ontbijt en anders lekkers.
...En weet je wat? Vergeet hun voorraad Indiaas eten niet...

Jungle Jims was set up by us, being Dave and Rachel, in May 2003. The reason for the name is in memory of Daves father who was known by a few as jungle Jim and was also a shop keeper.
We still say a huge thank you to all those that helped in setting us up - maybe not to Cookie for bringing that drunken Irish man along while shelves were being build amidst much swearing. We never found out how he responded after being directed to the nearest pub - one bearing a rainbow flag.
Finally the day came for us to be open for business. We'd only taken delivery of our main stock the evening before which took Dave and friend Chris the night to put out on the shelves. The boys had done well though by the time I turned up at 8 o'clock that Saturday morning I did feel that Dave was over reacting by trying to sleep on the shop floor. There were still other things needing to be sorted, we s needed a cash register for one thing which then had to be translated from Dutch. By 11 o'clock our customers were literally banging on the door and were more than willing to put up with the lack of .organisation...... I think professioalism is more apt. I still think that one of the few embarrassing problems - for a shop of any sorts - that we had to get around is that we hadn't even thought about carrier bags. Many thanks to JH for leaving some of his unwanted bits and bobs behind. Even more a big grovelling thank you to all of our cusomers that have supported us.
Yep, you're so right. Dave and I had never done anything of this kind before - complete novices. In fact a new word should have been thought of for how we were feeling but two years on and we're still going. We've just had a full broad sheet size write up in the local Dutch newspaper. Yes, I'm proud. A good proportion of our customers our Dutch - many of them 'gek voor salt 'n' vinegar chips'
Now what is it we sell? British food - not just British but Irish, a bit of Australian and American. If there is something you're wanting that we don't stock then we try and find it.
(Nigella Lawsons cook book - don't get me started!!!)
We have the obligatory clotted cream, meat and sweet pies, sausages, Bisto, Jelly, ginger beer etc etc etc. Stuff for the larder - now that's a good name isn't it?

Our aim, for how ever long our customers keep returning and telling their friends/neighbours/colleagues about us is to:
Inform when our next shopping trip to the UK is - generally every 3 weeks.
Put up a list of what our customers have asked us for which we don't hold and if the general responce is favourable to that product then we will endeavour to stock it.

and because we place our customers posters up in our shop window anyway, offer to place it on this website (for free).

Quorn™ Chow Mein

Serves 4

Ingredients:

350g Quorn™ pieces
60ml (4 tbsp) light soy sauce
30ml (2 tbsp) dry sherry
250g pack medium egg noodles
10ml (2 tsp) sesame oil
15ml (1 tbsp) sunflower oil
1 clove garlic, crushed
10ml (2 tsp) grated root ginger
1 bunch spring onions, trimmed and sliced
1 large red pepper, de-seeded and thinly sliced
1 yellow pepper, de-seeded and thinly sliced
175g (6oz) mushrooms, wiped and sliced
30ml (2 tbsp) hoisin sauce

Method:

Place the Quorn™ pieces in a bowl and stir in the soy sauce, sherry and sugar. Cover and leave to marinate for 30 minutes.

Cook the egg noodles according to the packet instructions, then drain well and rinse under the cold running water. Toss in the sesame oil.

Heat half the sunflower oil in a wok until almost smoking. Add the ginger and garlic and stir-fry for a few seconds. Drain the Quorn™ pieces (reserving the marinade), and add to the wok. Stir-fry for 3-4 minutes until lightly browned. Remove from the wok with a slotted spoon and set aside.

Add the rest of the oil and all the vegetables to the wok and stir-fry over a high heat for 3-4 minutes until just tender.

Add the reserved marinade and hoisin sauce to the wok with the Quorn™ pieces. Simmer for 2-3 minutes until the sauce is bubbling then toss in noodles and heat through for 1 minute. Serve immediately.

Have you had a look at the Emporium of Goodies. It's just been rated 79 by Alexa

The site claims the William Gibsons quote "The Net is a waste of time, and that's exactly what's right about it" as it byline but It's anything but. You never know what going to pop up, the posts swing from a report about a children's roundabout in Africa pumping water for a whole village to how we might have never seen the Dalek's in Dr Who again. More a magazine than a website and acts as a showcase for some of the best images held on the flickr site.

Spiced Oxtail and Shitake Mushroom with pineau des charentes

In a heavy pan lightly brown some onion.

Seal and brown the oxtail segments

Add a good glug of red wine and deglaze the pan.

Add water to cover the oxtail.

Bring to a simmer and remove all the scum.

Add,

bouquet gurney, A carrot cut into 4, two celery sticks snapped in half. A couple of bashed and pealed garlic bulbs,

Simmer for 3 to 4 hours

Remove oxtail segments, place to one side

Strain liquid to remove stock vegetables, retain liquid you will need it later.

If the oxtail meat comes away easily then remove by gently scraping if not simmer some more until you can

Place the meat back into the strained liquids

Add a tea spoonful of marmite

Add shitake mushrooms and a single chilli,

I took a chance and just put a couple of slits down the side, but you might wish to slit the chilli down the middle and remove the seeds.

Simmer for another 2 hours

Towards the end, remove the chilli and add a glug of pineau des charentes

Sea salt to taste.

Leave to cool. Then warm but not boil before serving.
